The Incredible Health-Supporting Powers of Herbs and Spices

I always used to think of herbs and spices as just tasty, fragrant, pretty additions to meals and nothing more. I mean, how could a little ground up powder be anything that special? Much to my pleasant surprise, I've come to learn that herbs and spices are actually some of the most powerful tools in our wellness arsenal!

Herbs and spices are rich sources of antioxidants that may help protect our cells from free radicals, supporting our overall health with each delicious bite!

Here's a look at the potential health benefits of some of my favorites that I try to incorporate into my meals daily:

GARLIC - Research suggests garlic may support immune function and cardiovascular health. It contains compounds with antimicrobial properties and acts as a source of antioxidants. Studies indicate it may help support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within normal range. Thank goodness garlic is so easy to incorporate into most savory recipes. With garlic, wellness has never tasted so good!

GINGER - Ginger is traditionally known for supporting digestion and may help with occasional nausea. It contains anti-inflammatory compounds and may support immune function. Research suggests it provides antioxidant benefits and may support cardiovascular health. Ginger has a reputation for being more of a "wintertime" spice, but it definitely can and should be enjoyed all year long in a variety of recipes and teas.

CINNAMON - Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants and may help support healthy blood sugar levels. Research suggests it has antimicrobial properties and anti-inflammatory compounds. I don't think I've ever met someone who doesn't like the naturally sweet flavor of cinnamon. Fortunately that means many of us are probably already consuming it and receiving its potential benefits.

CLOVES - Cloves contain compounds with antimicrobial properties and are rich in antioxidants. Research suggests they may support bone health and dental wellness. This powerful spice has a super strong flavor, but fortunately because it's so packed with beneficial compounds, a little bit goes a long way!

TURMERIC - Turmeric's bright orange color is a tell-tale sign that it's bursting with beneficial compounds. It contains natural anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in antioxidants. Research suggests it may support healthy blood sugar levels and provide immune support. For those not used to its strong flavor, it's more of an acquired taste on its own, but I've learned to like it a whole lot, especially as part of a flavorful curry! Fresh turmeric (it's a root that you can peel and grate much like ginger root) has a much milder flavor than powdered if that's your preference. Eating turmeric in combination with black pepper may help with the absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.

This list is just some of my favorites, but ALL herbs and spices, whether dried or fresh, can offer wonderful nutritional benefits. A simple search for whatever spice or herb you're curious about will likely show similar research on their potential wellness benefits.

I hope you are inspired to make a habit out of incorporating these health-supporting, tasty additions, starting with your next meal!
